She will not run as an indie. Every candidate has a hardcore group of supporters that say this kind of stuff.

It happened in 2004 with the Clarkies and this year with Edwards. I supported both and I had to deal with some of the supporters saying this kind of emotional bs. I was not one of those "indie" people.

Online polls mean absolutely nothing. (2.00 / 2)

Even on a site as prominent as CNN, a small number of supporters that have a great interest in the poll results will skew it by multiple votes, organizing efforts in key base areas, etc.

For Christ's sake, Kucinich won an ABC poll once asking who won a debate.

61% of Clinton supporters don't get politics (2.00 / 1)

This means 61% of Clinton supporters would like her to sacrifice a lifetime of work building up the party and working towards its goals, ruining her reputation and the legacy of her husband, in an epically doomed exercise in narcissistic futility. There's not the tiniest chance in hell she or Obama would win if she ran as an independent. I'm not sure what's scarier: that her supporters know that, or that they don't.

Hopefully, these same 61% are malleable enough that when Hillary tells them often enough to donate to Barack and vote for Barack, they'll do it.

by mattw on Wed Jun 04, 2008 at 09:00:11 PM EST

If Clinton ran as an independent... (none / 0)

You know, I hate to dignify a "diary" like this with actual content, but what the hey -

Let's say Clinton decided to run as an independent. Best case, she might be able to get on the ballot in 25-30 states, since there are many that won't allow the loser of a primary to run as an independent in the general.

There's no way she gets to 270 electoral votes in that scenario. There's probably no way Obama gets to 270 electoral votes in that scenario. BUT...if Clinton could win a few states - let's say WV, KY and AR, where she ran strongest in the general, then McCain might not get to 270 electoral votes either.

And what happens next, in that case? It goes to the House to decide.

The Democratic-controlled House.

Thanks for playing. See you in 2016!

That'd be an interesting strategy: Why can't she have her name only on these three states, West Virginia, Kentucky, Arkansas, and why not have Obama remove his name and endorse her in those states alone?

It'd be an interesting scenario, but probably you'd get a backlash from people all over the United States who felt the Democrats were "gaming the system".

Re: Lou Dobbs: 61% want Hillary to run as Independ (none / 0)

Get real Obama fans. You just voted for someone who is going to lose a race any other qualified Democrat would win.

What really bothers my about the Democratic party is the simple lack of fairness. There is a strong dislike of democracy in Howard Dean's DNC. The superdelegates, the caucuses and the proportional representation is a total disaster. An incredibly undemocratic system. Heck the GOP looked like a model of fairness and democracy compared to our disaster.

This is not to say I don't support our nominee. Just saying our nomination process is deeply flawed. And those writing posts defending this anti-democratic system are just continuing in making the case for a third, more democratic, party.

Re: Lou Dobbs: 61% want Hillary to run as Independ (none / 0)

Proportional representation is "undemocratic". And winner-take-all is supposedly democratic? What utter nonsense. Winner-take-all is the least democratic system ever devised.

As for the superdelegates, if they were entirely missing, Obama would have secured the nomination even earlier. They didn't affect the outcome, they merely postponed it.

Re: Lou Dobbs: 61% want Hillary to run as Independ (none / 0)

I think most of us will acknowledge that our system isn't perfect. But the system has been in place long long before Howard Dean came around, long before Barack Obama came around.

What a lot of us have a problem with is the whining about the rules after the game has started. Each candidate knew how the system worked. I don't believe we heard a peep out of Camp Clinton before the primary season began about the unfairness of the rules. You can't decide you don't like the rules after you've realized that you will lose.

We should work on developing a new system for the next primary season, but any criticism about the rules in the primary season is nothing more than whining.
