Whose Movement? NRN To Pittsburgh in `09

As organizers of the Netroots Nation conference, we set a precedent this year by integrating the local Texas progressive community into the conference. Local Texroots bloggers and activists organized panels, conducted training workshops, and proved to the country that even in dark Republican times (see Delay, Tom) progressives can band together and kick ass. Texans like Congressman Lloyd Doggett reminded us what national leadership looks like.

Looking ahead to Pittsburgh next August, we have a real opportunity to ground the conference in the surrounding regional progressive communities from Ohio, West Virginia, Kentucky, Indiana, New Jersey, New York, and beyond.

Which leaders should we engage? What are the issues? Where can we find the robust communities?

too bad the next NRN won't be in Philly. Pittsburgh is a bit out of the way for many people including myself. Not to mention that philly has a ton to offer folks who could make nYc and perhaps D.C. a part of their trip.

but Pittsburgh is a nice medium sized city. Some cool neighborhoods mixed in with amazing geography. A blue-collar, higher-education lovers kind of town. And despite Pittsburgh's improvements over the past few decades, it really needs every bit of help on the economic front as the region continues to bleed people to other parts.

Philly is great, but just turned out to be cost-prohibitive.

that makes sense. Pittsburgh is a fine choice. and having amazingly cool in-laws out in Pittsburgh might justify the trip.

it would be nice if different regions of the country were represented each year though. Pittsburgh is arguably a Midwestern city (chicago had YK last year).

ACORN has a feisty office in Allegheny County working on a range of issues, but fighting very hard against the foreclosure crisis, including winning a moratorium on sheriff's sales in the County.

They also have offices across the Northeast, include big offices in Philly and NYC. I would suggest talking to them.


Project Vote is the largest voter registration organization in the US and a leader in the fight for voter rights. 2.1 million voters registered since 2003.

Wrong question.  What the netrooters are trying to find out is "Who's movement?  I hope we'll find out in Pittsburgh.

I'm expecting a much bigger W.Va. contigent next year. There's a lot of excitement at West Virginia Blue about Pitt. in '09.

DL21C in NYC! (none / 0)

Here in New York, which isn't ridiculously far from Pittsburgh after all, Democratic Leadership in the 21st Century (DL21C) is the most successful mainstream progressive organization I've encountered.  

DL21C is led by young Democrats, and though it doesn't have an explicit Netroots focus, its youth makes that a given.  They're a great resource for next year.
